Arthritis– what is it?
Arthritis literally means joint inflammation. The most common type is osteo arthritis. It is also referred to as "wear and tear" arthritis and degenerative joint disease (DJD). This type of arthritis is very common in:
the spine,
hips,
knees,
hands.
Joints are where two bones meet. Because bones are rigid, the joint allows movement between bones, and thus allows us to move. In order to undertake any activity involving movement, from walking, to talking, to playing the piano, we need this movement in our joints. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage, that normally sits on the surface of where the two bones meet, starts to wear down (see above diagram of normal knee and knee with arthritis).
Who gets arthritis?
Most people will eventually develop some type of osteo-arthritis to varying degrees. Previous injuries, and a family history increases your risk of developing osteo arthritis.
Is osteo arthritis treatable?
The most effective known treatment for mild to moderate osteo-arthritis is glucosamine. There are many different types of glucosamine on the market. Liquid forms of glucosamine are more readily absorbed, therefore more likely to give benefit. With a few exceptions, most people can take glucosamine.
